The Story of Emerald Lake
In the 1980s, Bob and Bette Vande Weghe envisioned finding a small paradise—large enough to accommodate their eight children if needed, but primarily a retreat for their active retirement. Their love for Western North Carolina began during family camping trips in the Brevard area, a welcome escape from the Florida heat. Seeking a property reminiscent of their New Jersey summer home, they dreamed of a location with a beautiful lake.
They discovered the perfect spot in Transylvania County, near Brevard and DuPont State Forest: a six-acre, spring-fed lake they named Emerald Lake. They called their slice of heaven and bed-and-breakfast business The Sassy Goose. Initially, the property featured just the lake, a barn, and an A-frame house that served as the office. Bette, envisioning greater comfort, oversaw the construction of a lodge with private, air-conditioned rooms. Inspired by an old logging road, they chose a scenic elevated location overlooking the lake for their home and a three-bedroom lodge. In the years that followed, they added cozy log cabins to the property.
Each morning, Bette served breakfast in the lodge’s dining room while Bob entertained guests with his charming stories. The Vande Weghes delighted in sharing their paradise with guests and friends. In 2013, The Sassy Goose transitioned from a bed-and-breakfast to a vacation rental business, offering individual buildings rather than rooms. In 2024, the property changed hands, and its new owners renamed it Emerald Lake.
The Greer family, who had raised their three sons in Brevard, returned to the area in retirement. Like the Vande Weghes, they had long dreamed of a place where their growing family could gather—close to nature, with spaces for togetherness and privacy alike. They envisioned a sanctuary where everyone could enjoy outdoor activities and tranquil relaxation. Emerald Lake fulfilled that dream.
Purchased in January 2024, the property underwent extensive renovations to refresh its accommodations while preserving its natural beauty. Now complete, Emerald Lake is ready to welcome you. We hope you enjoy everything this special place has to offer. Welcome!
